You can bake bread in a slow cooker (although expect a flatter, softer loaf and make time for a practice run). Line the pot with baking paper and mold the dough to fit. Cook on a high setting for one to 2.5 hours, checking every 45 minutes. Towards the end, use a cook’s thermometer to check whether the bread is baked – the inside should be around 190°F to 199°F (88°C to 93°C). Serve warm with plenty of butter.

Soup is super easy in a slow cooker and most recipes can be easily adapted. For a tomato soup, you’ll need olive oil, freshly chopped basil, chopped garlic, onion and carrot, roughly chopped vine tomatoes, vegetable stock and tomato purée. Throw all the necessary ingredients in and cook for six to seven hours on a low heat or three hours on high. Blend lightly at the end for a chunky, rustic texture.

For a superbly succulent whole chicken, lay a seasoned bird with butter under its skin onto a bed of peeled carrots and onions. Add a cup of boiling water and cook on low for four to eight hours (depending on the cooker and the size of chicken) or until the juices run clear and the flesh is no longer pink. If you’re using a meat thermometer, aim for a temperature of 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the thigh. For crispy skin, put the chicken under a hot grill for a few minutes at the end.

Slow-cooker French toast is a bit like bread and butter pudding, but with all the flavors of this sweet breakfast classic. Pour the egg mixture over slices or cubes of bread, allow to soak for an hour or two, then butter the inside of a slow cooker and spoon in the bread and liquid. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top and cook on high for two hours, or on low for four hours.

A simple fruity dessert that’s always a winner, apple crumble is usually made on the hob then baked in the oven. To do in a slow cooker, put peeled, cored apples sprinkled with cinnamon and a little fresh orange juice in a slow cooker, then top with a blended mix of oats, plain flour, muscovado sugar and walnuts. Place kitchen towel over the crumble to absorb excess moisture and cook on a low heat for around three to 3.5 hours, removing the lid and paper in the last 10 minutes for a crispy top.
