Local businesses partner with new farmers market for tropical fruits
St. George has a new farmers market off Sunset Blvd. with fresh produce that gets delivered two to three times a week from California.
Next to Tia’s Bakery, the St. George Farmers Market adds fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, dried fruit, and a wide selection of exotic fruits. The event is owned and operated by the Christov family, a part-owner at Tia’s Bakery. Nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins operate the daily functions of both businesses.
“Tia’s was supposed to be our farm-to-table restaurant for the local community, and we could not find all-year-round, farm-fresh produce in St. George,” owner Ellie Christov said.
Local businesses like Gaia’s Garden have already partnered with the St. George Farmer’s Market to get their ingredients from them. Other businesses have reached out but nothing has been finalized so they could not be named at this time.
“Our goal is to really bring fresh fruits and vegetables to the community, and we already bring it for Tia’s because that’s our farm-to-table restaurant. Here, we aren’t really looking to make a lot of money out of it,” Christov said.
The St. George Farmer’s Market will have their berry selection year-round, ranging from blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries since their products come from a farmer in Santa Maria, California. The Christovs said all of the fresh produce comes from their “family farmer.”
“We had quite a few requests from the community to bring tropical fruit and so mangos and coconuts are a big hit,” Christov said.
The grand opening on June 8 attracted many locals who found the new farmers market through social media. St. George Farmers Market will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
